The entire population of Tortilla Flat can fit comfortably in the corner booth of your local pancake house. No shopping malls or rush hour traffic here. But folks do visit, and they've been doing so for a heaping long time. Tortilla Flat has its roadside roots embedded deep within the annals of Arizona history, dating back to 1904 when it served as an Apache Trail stagecoach stop.

Although cars replaced coaches, and a fire whipped through Tortilla Flat in '87, the rebuilt site holds its own, inviting travelers to hitch their horse (or station wagon) and settle in for a cold beer, a meaty hamburger, and some of that perfectly pleasing prickly pear ice cream. Old West eats can be rounded up at the Superstition Saloon where you can park your rump roast on a saddle stool after paying your respects to the wooden Indian guarding the door. Tempting treats abound in the charming ice cream and candy shop. It's a musty, dusty, trusted old roadside retreat, one that's been around -- and will be around -- for a long, long time.
