Palatki Ruin
Forest Road 795 Sedona, AZ 86336 928-282-4119 ![]() Inhabited eight centuries ago, Palatki, a Hopi word meaning "red house," is one the Verde Valley's largest Sinagua Indian Villages. The abandoned dwelling and contiguous Red Cliffs alcoves offer visitors a fascinating portal back in time. Pick up a site guide at the Visitor's Center, hike the short, quarter-mile pathway up to the ruin, then loop around and unearth the mysteries of rock art. Red Cliffs' extensive collection of pictographs and petroglyphs represent many periods of human occupation from the Sinagua, Yavapai and Apache to cultures that inhabited the area some 6,000 years ago. Survey the Grotto Alcove, Willard's Roost and the Roasting Pit as interpretive experts impart a wealth of historical enlightenment. Plan to spend a couple hours exploring, wear comfortable shoes and help preserve the site by avoiding tactile contact with the rock art and by leaving behind any potsherds you find.
