Coming upon this verdant canyon may be jarring after spending so much time among brush and desert. If you can, hike the West Fork trail. Look for a walking stick at the beginning; it's become a tradition to leave your stick there after you finish hiking it. Be prepared to get wet, as it crosses the creek several times. Before you actually reach the trail, you'll pass the ruins of an abandoned lodge. Plan to visit in mid- to late October when the foliage is brilliant. In warmer months, visit Rock Slide State Park, where you can go down a natural sandstone slide that drops you into a pool in Oak Creek. It's often crowded, however.
