Montezuma Castle National Monument
2800 Montezuma Castle Road
Camp Verde, AZ 86322
928-567-3322

Incorrectly linked to the Aztecs of central Mexico when discovered by early explorers, Montezuma Castle National Monument, only 90 miles north of Phoenix, is home to one of the country's best-preserved ancient ruins. The Sinagua people, who built two pueblos here, inhabited the region in the early 12th and 13th centuries before moving on. While the lower, larger dwelling has been ravaged by centuries of rain and floods, the higher, five-story, 20-room structure (built circa 1150 A.D.) has been wonderfully preserved thanks to a rocky limestone outcropping hanging over its entrance.

A visitor center with a complete array of fascinating and informative exhibits welcomes you to the monument. The displays cover the history and culture of the Sinagua and also the harsh desert region in which they lived. Although you are not permitted to enter either ruin (they've been closed to the public since 1951), the nearby viewing trail is easy to traverse and is wheelchair accessible. Bring a lunch; there are picnic tables shaded by beautiful sycamore trees along the creek that runs near the path.
