Lake Powell
Highway 89
Page, AZ 86040
888-261-7243

Expansive Lake Powell was formed by the damming of the Colorado River where the Glen and Grand Canyons meet. Construction of the dam began in 1960 and was completed three years later. After an additional 17 years, Glen Canyon was filled to capacity and the birthing of Lake Powell was complete. Thousands of visitors flock to its shores each year. The only way to properly experience the lake is by boat, whether it's on a cruise filled with people or in a kayak with just you and an oar. Boat tours give a sweeping overview, but there's nothing like exploring the narrow canyons that spread out from the lake like watery fingers.

The lake is filled with an abundant array of freshwater fish including crappie, bass, walleye, catfish, bluegill and perch. Fishing is available year round, with spring and fall being the prime biting times. Since the lake stretches across two states, be sure you have the correct license for the area in which you're angling. All five of the lake's marinas sell licenses for the entire lake. Watch what you reel in though, there are several species of endangered fish in the lake. Throw them back or face a large fine.
Amenities: In addition to water sports like jetskiing and wakeboarding, there are restaurants, watercraft rental companies and trading posts with a full array of Native souvenirs. Bait and tackle for fishing are available at all five marina stores.

Added Attractions: Once you tire of beach and boating activities, take a few short trips to the surrounding community to visit Navajo Village, the John Wesley Powell Museum, take an Overland Canyon Jeep tour or get a bird's-eye view from a helicopter tour.
Admission & Parking: Admission charges apply to each vehicle, but because this is federal property, drivers with National Parks Service Passes or Golden Eagle Passports pay nothing.

Where to Eat: Family dining and fast-food outlets abound.
Fido Friendly? Pets on leashes are welcome. Owners are expected to observe proper etiquette in picking up after their animals.
Insider Info: Houseboaters and campers planning a stay of more than a day or so should plan to bring coolers of food and drink with them or risk breaking the bank.
