Casa Grande National Monument
1100 Ruins Drive Coolidge, AZ 85228 520-723-3172 ![]() Walk in the footsteps of the ancients as you tour this site of a Hohokam settlement approximately one hour from either Phoenix or Tucson. The nation's first archeological preserve, the 2,163-acre Casa Grande ruins emanate from the mysterious big house, or "casa grande." Although the farming settlement that occupied this land lasted more than a thousand years, by the time European settlers arrived in America, all that remained were the ruins of the house, the remnants of a canal system used for farming irrigation, and various artifacts. Still, visitors today can see how the Hohokam constructed their buildings from dried cactus ribs and adobe-clay mud, wove baskets from indigenous reeds and grasses, and survived by taming the hostile desert. Visitors should allow at least one hour to tour the ruins, with additional time for the Visitor's Center, where displays and hands-on activities illuminate Hohokam life. There are guided tours available or you can choose a self-guided tour along a 300-yard walking trail well marked by signs. Special archaeology tours take place during March, while November features the special events of Native American month.
