Chase Field
401 E. Jefferson St.
Phoenix, AZ 85004
602-514-8400

Chase Field, formally Bank One Ballpark, was made for baseball. Built in 1998 for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the ballpark boasts some of the best sight lines in the majors today. It features a nine-million-pound retractable steel roof and a swimming pool in right center field. Some folks say that the Ballpark has the look and feel of a giant hangar, and that's the point, sort of. The 49,000-capacity stadium borrowed many design elements from the warehouse district that surrounds it. The traditional red brick and green structure, with its natural Bull's Eye Bermuda grass, retains a nostalgic feel, but offers plenty of modern-day ballpark conveniences, including a massive air-conditioning system. Chase Field also provides a home for Arizona DiamondTown and Baxter's Clubhouse, which feature baseball memorabilia and interactive games and displays. Tours are available year-round and feature behind- the-scenes stops in the batting tunnel, press box and dugouts. When the Diamondbacks aren't stinging other major league teams, Chase Field plays host to college football's Insight.com Bowl, as well as monster truck and supercross events.l

Best Bet for Parking: Downtown Phoenix boasts 33,000 parking spaces within a 15-minute walk of the Ballpark. Expect to pay between $5-$15 for garage and surface parking. Good bets are the Arizona Center Garage off Fillmore and Fifth Streets or Patriots Square Park at First and Jefferson.

Best Ways to Get to the Park: If you don't want to miss the first pitch, plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time. Downtown Phoenix gets notoriously clogged on game days. Eastsiders can take Loop 2002 west to the Washington Street exit and continue west to downtown. From the southeast Valley, take I-10 to the I-17 split and exit right on 7th Street. Those traveling from the west side can take I-10 to 7th Avenue and turn right. And those ball fans heading down from North Central Phoenix, hop on surface streets, including 7th Avenue, Central or 7th Street. Bicycle taxis are available to and from parking areas and nearby eateries ($5-$10 tip per person).

Best Food at the Park: Nearly a quarter- mile-long stretch of concession stands offers traditional eats such as popcorn, peanuts, cool brews, desert ices and signature Diamondback Dogs. Favorite chain chow selections include Blimpie, Ben & Jerry's, Garcia's, Little Caesar's and McDonalds. For a real splurge, check out appetizers at Hi-Tops Cafe or anything from the Jack Daniel's Grill at TGI Friday's Front Row Grill.
