ARIZONA INTRODUCTION

Arizona is known as the heart of the old west. A land of cowboys and indians, with towering cacti, beautiful mountains and unbelievable scenery. A land different than any other place in the world. There are many tales to be told about the riches of the Superstitions, the tribes of a forgotten world and how they tamed the wild west.

The history of Arizona is deeply rooted in the tribes that settled our land originally. There were tribes in Arizona over 20,000 years ago and in fact the Hopi village of Oraibi, may be the oldest town in America where people have continuously lived. The name "Arizona" is a Spanish interpretation of "arizuma," an Aztec Indian word meaning "silver-bearing." It is also based on Pima Indian word "arizonac" for "little spring place."

Arizona has been part of Mexico since the Spanish Conquistadors settled the land in the 1500's. In 1821 Mexico declared its independence from Spain and eventually went to war with the United States. This war ended in 1848, and the land north of the Gila River became United States territory. In 1853 the rest of the area was acquired by the Gadsen Purchase. Then the great westward movement of our early pioneers began, and Arizona entered the phase of its history which has provided so much story material for books and movies.

Despite what most people think before they visit Arizona, there aren't too many TeePee's still around and there aren't any gun fights at high noon. Today, Arizona is a great place to raise a family, retire without concerns of a harsh winter and live the good life of golf, shopping, culture and beautiful scenery.
